Baker’s mind-boggling cakes look so real people can’t tell if they’re sweet or savoury

A talented baker has left people’s jaws dropping and minds blown over her incredible illusion cakes that are intended to look like savoury food items and are very realistic

Zoe Burmester, a professional baker who lives in Somerset, has left people’s minds boggling over her bizarre cakes, which look like one thing but are actually another.

From sweet treats designed to look like cheese boards to pizzas and seafood boils, the 46-year-old can transform a cake into just about anything.

Her work is so popular it’s even been featured on TV’s Extreme Cake Makers and Zoe says the bakes can take anywhere from a day to weeks and even months to complete.

But despite all that hard work, she really loves what she does.

She said: “For me, the reason I do what I do is because I enjoy it but it also brings out the child in everyone.

“It doesn’t matter whether they’re 90 or nine, when they see my illusion cakes, their faces light up and I see that sense of wonder, joy and excitement. It’s all a bit of fun.

“People always ask me how they’re going to cut it because they don’t want to destroy it, but I insist that it should be enjoyed because it’s just cake.

“We take photos and videos but then we cut it, eat it and celebrate.”

The process of making the illusion cakes involves carving a bake and covering it in chocolate ganache, before decorating it with modelling chocolate.

And while that may sound straightforward, there’s a lot of texturing, colouring and layering to be done – all by hand.

The baker adds that she takes inspiration for her cakes from art, photography and everyday life.

“I always like to push the boundaries and strive for people to do a double-take. That’s when you know you’ve done it well.

“It’s very playful and I definitely see why there’s a huge appeal to people.”
